About Us

Learn about Versatile Woodwork and what sets us apart from the rest.

Our Process

Tree removal jobs can be a wasteful line of work, so we set out to take a more resourceful approach. On a typical tree removal job, all of the logs and brush will be hauled to a local dump or landfill where it decomposes or is burned. Rather than taking brush and logs to a local dump, we salvage and process logs into boards and slabs for our woodshop. Smaller limbs and brush are made into woodchips or firewood. We air dry and kiln dry all of the material in-house and supply our woodshop with well over a thousand board feet of various local hardwoods every year. These materials make up over 90% of the total wood used in our woodshop to make tables, countertops, mantels and so much more.

Founded Versatile Woodwork

Spring 2019

Before starting a tree service Austin was a woodworker who saw the waste involved in disposing of large trees. A vision of salvaging urban timber from tree removals and repurposing it in a woodshop was born.

Milled First Salvaged Log

Summer 2019

It wasn’t long before the first log was milled. This is one of the only parts of our process that we outsource. We hire a local sawyer who brings his portable bandsaw to our log yard. All dimensional and slab lumber under 24″ is processed with this bandsaw.

First Company Vehicles Purchased

Summer 2019

A bucket truck was the first vehicle purchased. It allowed the safe removal of larger trees that would later be salvaged and milled. A pickup and trailer were soon purchased after.

Chipper & Chipper Truck Purchased

Spring 2020

A chipper and chipper truck were game-changing pieces of equipment. Multiple tree jobs could be completed without the need to unload brush at local landfills.

Built A Kiln & Started Drying Lumber

Fall 2020

One of the most overlooked steps in creating high-quality wood products is drying wood to a proper moisture content. To prepare salvaged lumber for use in the woodshop, a storage unit was outfitted with a Nyle dehumidification kiln. Lumber is dried to 6-8% moisture content before it is ready for interior use.

Started Woodworking With First Kiln Load

Winter 2020

Within a few months, the first load of dimensional walnut lumber was ready to be worked with. The rough-sawn lumber was planed and worked into a kitchen island as one of the first commissioned projects for the woodshop.

Stump Grinder Purchased

Spring 2021

A stump grinder was purchased in the spring of 2021 to round out the tree services offered.

Purchased a storefront

Spring 2022

A storefront in downtown Saint Charles was purchased to expand the woodshop and open a retail space to sell woodworking supplies and epoxy.

Officially Transitioned Into New woodshop

Fall 2022

After outfitting the back of the building for the woodshop, tools and materials were transferred into the new woodshop

Became Retailers Of Rubio Monocoat & Titebond

Winter 2023

Two trusted brands were added. Every brand Versatile Woodwork carries is trusted in our own custom projects. Rubio Monocoat and Titebond are two of the most essential.

Grand Opening

Spring 2024

After two and a half years of remodeling, a grand opening was celebrated in February of 2024.
